Jervon Pressley (Dresden Titans) You Are Only As Good As Your Last Performance

Jervon Pressley is a 21 year old 203cm forward from Charlotte, North Carolina that is playing his rookie season in Germany with the Dresden Titans. He started his basketball career in 2011 with Towson (NCAA) playing 31 games averaging 3.6ppg, 3.0rpg. In 2013 he moved to Hampton (NCAA) playing 21 games averaging 6.6ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.1bpg, FGP: 43.8%, FT: 56.9%. In his junior year he played 32 games averaging 6.1ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.4bpg, FGP: 44.3%, FT: 54.5%. As a senior he played 27 games averaging  6.6ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.7bpg, FGP: 46.7%, FT: 53.2%. He spoke to German Hoops about the first few months of his rookie season.

Jervon thanks for talking to German Hoops. Congrats on the big 75-61 win at home against the Hamburg Towers. How much of a release was it getting that 10 game losing streak monkey off your back?

It was a great release for the club and the long loyal supporting fans.

This was the best defensive performance of the season. Why do you feel did it take so long to defend consistently for 40 minutes?

I just feel as if everything is coming into play, we have a new coach and a new defensive philosophy, took time to adjust but everyone bought in so we could go into this break and new year with a win. “You are only as good as your last performance”.

The Dresden Titans were up by 12 points after three quarters. Despite all that has happened this season in games, was there some trepidation going into the fourth quarter or did you sense that the club was confident to finish the game strong?

I noticed the will to win this game from how everyone came out for warm ups, everyone was focused and together.

The Dresden Titans are a talented team, but do you feel that the wrong goals were set before the season in terms of what the club was capable of doing?

I wouldn’t say the wrong goals were set I would say we had a lesser focused team than we have now.

The biggest sore spot has been the defense. The worst phase was in November where it averaged giving up 99 points in five games. Why has it been getting defensive schemes working so difficult this season?

We had an offensive minded team previously before Coach Flynn and it was a system in place were we would win by out scoring teams instead of defensively stopping teams.

Even when new head coach Liam Flynn came on board, wins didn´t pop up. Are you confident that fans will see a new Dresden Titans attitude that will translate in more success?

Winning doesn’t happen overnight, nor can one person make a team win at ANY position. I’m certain with Coach Flynn the Dresden Titans fans will see a new confident and hard playing attitude from us Titan players.

One of the big winners in this tough time has been German Helge Baus who really has stepped up his game. Can one say that he has now arrived in the Pro A with his game?

Helge has been playing great, gained his confidence and believed in himself as we had been and started showing on the court he belongs!!!

It has been a tough season for you as a rookie after starting off strong, you have been hit hard with injuries. How tough was this time for you getting adjusted to not playing, rehabbing and losing games?

It was very hard sitting out watching loss after loss but it’s all a learning process, but I am grateful for the club keeping me in good spirits and supporting me.

How difficult is it in general coming back from an injury and having to get back on the floor and performing as if nothing had happened?

It’s not hard at all when you are doing something you love to do after watching practices and learning the system from the side, noticing what the team lacks helps you come in and think to fill in those voids.

What do you feel was most vital in your time away that you were able to pick up from the game and style of the Pro A that you will be able to use now as you continue to develop this season?

I feel as if I learned a lot about team timing and value of possessions are a major key not only in this league but all and being PHYSICAL in the low post on offense and defense from jump ball to the end of the game is a major factor in helping a team win.

You have continued to remain very active on the defensive end as your averaging 1,9 blocks. Has it been mostly your timing or knowing the opponents tendencies that has allowed you to be successful?

I would say it’s a combination of both and playing off of natural instincts and my teammates knowing I have their backs on protecting the rim.

What have you learned to appreciate the most about the holiday season in Germany?

I learned that holiday time is very special here, and this is a giving country with a big heart.

Klay Thompson recently hit 60 points in 29 minutes touching the ball for only 90 seconds. Where does this performance rank with you?

That performance has nothing to do with me. He is playing basketball in the NBA in America and I am playing basketball in the Pro A in Germany.

One always talks about Lebron and Curry, but one has to mention Russell Westbrook. He is averaging triple double stats at the moment. Is he stat wise the best player in the world right now?

Yes without a doubt he is statistically the best player in the world. “Men lie, women lie but numbers don’t

What was your most memorable Christmas experience when you were a kid?

My most memorable Christmas was waking up in the middle of the night at my grandparents house while they were sleeping on the morning of Christmas and coming to the couch to be first to opening my gifts and bragging on how great they were and just always loved being around my family and eating good.

What was the last movie that you saw?

I just recently see Bad Santa 2 on the fire stick.

Thanks Jervon for the chat.
