Braydon Hobbs (Giessen 46ers) I Am Not Always The Fastest Player But I Can Be Smarter And Try To Put Myself In The Right Spot To Help My Team

Braydon Hobbs is a 26 year old 196cm point guard playing in the Beko BBL for the Giessen 46ers and last season played for rent4office Nuernberg (Germany-ProA) where he averaged 11,9ppg, 4.1rpg, Assists-4(5.9apg), Steals-2(1.9spg), FGP: 55.8%, 3PT: 40.8%, FT: 82.4% . Braydon congrats on the big 70-68 in Weissenfels against 2004 Fiba Eurocup winner Mitteldeutscher BC. It was the second crunch time win a row and second with two points. Is this team slowly becoming better under pressure after losing some tough close battles at the start of the season against Wurzburg, Braunschweig and Bayreuth?

I think we have learned a lot from the games earlier in the season. We learned that we needed to be smarter at the end of games and also execute what coach wanted us to do.

The Giessen 46ers known for their solid defense started off poorly in the wolf´s den allowing 28 points, but then won the next three quarters, but then gave up on average 13 points in the last three quarters. What adjustments did Giessen make on the defense end not to let the game already be decided at halftime?

MBC started the game off extremely hot. They were hitting shots from all over. We were allowing them to get the shots they wanted. We had to adjust our 1 on 1 defense and our help side defense because it wasn’t good enough in the first quarter.

Eric Palm hit the game winning shot with 1,3 seconds left from the corner. Take us again through that play. Was that specifically designed for him? As a great shooter, a guy like Eric Palm is always a perfect option?

It was a huge shot by Eric in the corner. It was not specifically designed to happen that way but we had to take what the defense gave us. They got mixed up a bit with the hand off with Cam Wells and I, which left me open on the wing. They ran at me and Eric happened to be sitting wide open in the corner. He is a great shooter so that was an easy shot for him.

Franz Massenat got hot early in the first quarter. How key was it getting him out of his rhythm as the game progressed?

Massenat was knocking down a lot of shots in the first quarter. He is a tough player and I think the shots he was getting were from our bad defense. We had to play better 1 on 1 defense so he wasn’t able to continue to get great looks at the basket.

How important was it sweeping the season series from MBC? They may be at the bottom, but I am sure you will agree a lot better than their record shows?

It was big to be able to get those two wins against MBC on the year. They are definitely way better than their record shows. They have been in a lot of close games this year, where the ball doesn’t seem to bounce their way.

You have played in many arena´s in Germany, but the first time in Weissenfels. How unique was it playing in this arena where one always has the feeling the fans are on your back?

I have played in a lot of big arenas and against some crazy fans over my years. The gym in Weissenfels is unique compared to gyms in Germany. They have a good fan base which makes it fun to play in a place like that. I try to block it out as much as I can when playing though.

Every time we talk the season goal of remaining in the Beko BBL is mentioned, but with only two wins away from the playoff s and with anything possible in this competitive league can the competitive spirits of every player not be allowed to think playoffs now in the stretch run?

We have tried to make the playoffs one of our goals all season long. Like you said anything can happen in this league, so we are going to continue to work hard to try and make that possible.

The Giessen 46ers did have a three game winning streak, but are playing their best basketball now having won five of their last eight games. What do you believe has grown most with the team in the last 8 games that can be held accountable for the better play and success?

We have been playing solid basketball in the last couple of games. I think there is still room for improvement though. We are starting to get everybody healthy and finally being able to play together in practice and in games. The more we play and learn how to play together the better we will be.

The Giessen 46ers have no star, but have a very talented team that are all on the same page. I like to call you the mini Skyliners because in a way there is a lot of unselfishness in the team play. Do you think that some of that great team play of the Fraport Skyliners was able to rub off on your team during the game in Frankfurt?

Coach has stressed team basketball all season long. That is the only way we are going to be successful in this league. We do not have that one guy that we can rely on in games or in tough situations so we need to do it as a team. That starts with being unselfish on both ends of the floor.

Before the MBC game you had a three game stretch where you averaged 8 assists per game and if you add the two games before that you have averaged seven assists in those 5 games. How happy are you as of late with your decision making and knowing when to finish and when to create?

I am happy with how the last couple of games have went for us as a team. We have been executing a bit better and I think that is why my averages have been going up. I just try to make my teammates better and I try to put them in situations where they are their best. I think we have been doing a pretty good job of that lately.

You continue to be one of the best defenders on the team. How has your game on the defense end grown with the arrival of Karsten Tadda. What does his game allow you to differently when your both defending together on the floor?

My defense has definitely improved this season. I think it still needs a ton of work. Having great guard defenders on my team has helped me to learn from them. Tadda and Yorman are perfect examples to learn from. I am not always the fastest player, but I can be smarter and try to put myself in the right spot, on defense, to help my team.

Now with the Super Bowl over is the NCAA March madness what you focus on next or do you follow another sport?

I will definitely be following march madness now that football season has come to an end. March is the best time of year to be watching college basketball.

ESPN magazine ranked Lebron James at #3. With all the legends behind him was this an accurate assessment?

I am not sure if that is an accurate assessment or not. It is hard to tell because Lebron could achieve so much more in his career. He will end up being one of the best of all time, so we would have to put him in the top 5 of all time at least.

What was the last movie that you saw?

Talladaga Nights.

Thanks Braydon for the chat.
