Dominik Spohr (BG Goettingen) I Would Fight Every Single Second On The Court To Help My Team To Stay And Get Established In The BBL

Dominik Spohr is a 25 year old 198cm forward that is playing his first season with BG Goettingen. He started his basketball career in 2004 for BBV Hagen (Regionalliga). He then helped Phoenix Hagen move up to the Beko BBL in 2009 playing  24 games: 2.0ppg. In three years in Hagen he played 64 Beko BBL games. Last season he played for the Giessen 46ers playing 29 games: 5.6ppg, 2.0rpg, FGP: 42.9%, 3PT: 37.3%, FT: 75.6%. He spoke to German Hoops after helping BG Goettingen win the German Pro A title.

Dominik congrats on winning the 2014 Pro A title with BG Goettingen. After a big title in the States, the famous players say afterwards “Im going To Disneyland. Where would you want to go after this big title win against Crailsheim?

We had 1 or 2 little partys to go to and celebrate the chip.

BG Goettingen had the slim 35-33 lead at halftime. In the second half, BG Goettingen was able to pull away and get the win. What was key for getting the win at home in Goettingen?

The key was our defense and our unselfish style on offense.

Being able to totally control a Carlos Medlock is very unlikely, but BG Goettingen did force him to eight turnovers. How important was it doing this since BG Goettingen was able to gain 8 extra ball possessions out of the eight turnovers.

That was big. Los is the heart of the Crailsheim team and we were able to put a lot of pressure on him and force him into mistakes

Was sharing the ball one of the biggest strength of the season? Mallett, Godbold and you scored in double figures in the win. It seemed like unselfishness was a term that Johann Roijakkers was able to mold into the minds of the players.

We had good chemistry throughout the whole year. We shared the ball very well that made us hard to predict that is part of coachs philosophy!

BG Goettingen were undefeated at home this season. Each team will say that they have the best fans, but what was the secret to the success in the Sparkassen arena? The fans played a huge role, but what helped BG Goettingen play with so much confidence at home?

Our fans are awesome. They helped and supported us every single second and helped us with a lot of energy that we felt on the court. They deserve to be in the BBL.

You stated in an earlier interview that you were young in Hagen and had more of a role with BG Goettingen in supporting moving up. Is this BG Goettingen a team that will be able to stay in the Beko BBL for many years to come?

I really hope so. The BBL is a very tough league. you never know what happens. All I can say is I would fight every single second on the court to help my team to stay and to get established in the BBL

If you had to choose one player who was the unsung hero, who would you chose?

Unsung might not really nail it because he is a legend here in GÖ but I still want to say Marco Grimaldi. He was a great captain great leader who always set the right tone on defense and never really shined because of his scoring thats why I would put him in this category

This season, you averaged 9,0ppg and 2,6rpg in 17 minutes per game. How pleased were you with your season. You shot 50% from outside. What else can you improve in your game?

I’m very pleased with my shooting percentage. Me and Jeremy shot the ball on a high percentage because we didnt have to take any bad shots. We were patient and were willing to give up good shots for great shots. But of course there is still a lot of room for improvements. I’ve always been a hard worker in the offseason and I dont want change it. Work on my physicality and my game as well

What is your prediction for the next NBA playoff rounds? Thunder-Clippers, Pacers-Wizzards and Heat-Nets?

OKC will beat the Clippers. Pacers over Wizards.SA over Portland and of course the Heat over the Nets.

You played four seasons with Bernd Kruel. What is your fondest memory with him? It seems like everyone has their special story about him?

The Storch is a great person. I really appreciated the time with him on and off the court and I’m really glad to consider him a friend of mine. I couldnt believe that he really retired. I’ve always thought he has still 4-5 good years in front of him. I have a ton of good memories with him.

Thanks Dominik for the chat.
