DaShaun Wood(Alba Berlin): Winning In Munich Was like A Dream For Me
DaShaun Wood is a 26 year old 185cm point guard from Detroit, Michigan that is playing his second season in Germany for Alba Berlin. He is a young point guard with natural leadership abilities, who directs teammates on the floor and takes the ball in clutch moments. Loves to go inside to score, challenging the big guys, but has also shooting range from behind the 3pts arch. Despite lack of size, he can be effective even at the defensive side. He played at Wright state from 2003-2007. In his senior year, he played 33 games averaging 19.6ppg, 5.1rpg, 4.0apg, 1.9spg, FGP: 43.5%, 3Pts: 37.3%, FT: 88.3%. In 2008-2009, he played for : Benetton Treviso (Italy-SerieA), injured in Oct.’08 and was off for 2 months: Eurocup: 12 games: 5.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 3.3apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 40.0%, 3PT: 25.0%, FT: 87.5%; Italian League: 17 games: 7.2ppg, 2.9rpg, 3.2apg, 1.4spg, FGP: 43.1%, 3PT: 35.6%, FT: 70.4%. Last season, he was the Beko BBL MVP with The Deutsche Bank Skyliners playing EuroCup Qualifying Round: 2 games: 13.5ppg, 2.5rpg, 5.0apg; EuroChallenge: 6 games: 16.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 5.2apg, 1.7spg, FGP: 46.9%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 73.7%; German League: 42 games: Score-1(19.0ppg), 4.6rpg, Assists-2(5.9apg), 1.2spg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 33.2%, FT: 80.3%. He spoke to German Hoops after the 85-79 win against FC Bayern Munich.
Congrats on the 85-79 win in Munich giving the team of Dirk Bauermann their first loss at home. What was the atmosphere like there playing in front of German soccer player Bastian Schweinstieger and everyone else?
Winning in Munich was like a dream for me. It is a great city with great fans, a great coach and many great German national players. The atmosphere was great and it was great competing at a high level and winning the game in their arena.
Michigan beat Ohio State 40-34 today who have the blue and yellow colors as does Alba Berlin. I guess the color of the day was blue and yellow?
I am from Michigan and today was perfect. Michigan and Ohio State are two great rivals and the funny thing is that Ohio State and Bayern Munich both wear the color red.
Munich had the 43-39 lead at halftime. What was giving Alba Berlin the biggest problems in the first 20 minutes?
Our defense was giving us the biggest problems. We scored 39 points which is ok, but we gave up too many points with 43. We needed more stops. Our defense kicked it up in the third quarter. We were getting more loose balls and were rebounding better and took the momentum from Munich.
Did coach Gordon Herbert tell you to take charge in the third quarter as you scored 9 unanswered points?
No he didn´t. That is just the way the game went. We have so many weapons and I just got hot. I just kept getting the ball. Last week against Bamberg it was Derrick Allen who was hot and so he kept getting the ball as well.
What was your impression of Ben Hansborough who has been a bit in the dog house of Dirk Bauermann this season, but he came out and performed very well.
When he came in he really changed the game. We had control, but lost it a bit as he drove very well to the hoop and found his teammates. I have been following his NCAA career at Notre Dame and was nice that he could show his talent in a big game like this. I am sure that he will get going.
You have mentioned that Alba Berlin has so many weapons, but how important was Serb Marko Simonovic tonight?
He has been playing very well as of late. He played with a lot of confident. He had been having trouble with a mismatch and I called his number and he hit that big three pointer. I have been very impressed by his play.
You won the game at the end with big shots and rebounds. Is this type of situation as normal for you like it is for Tom Brady winning games at the end and Paris Hilton wearing big sunglasses?
These type of situations at the end have been with me my whole career starting in high school up to now. But I don’t always have to score, but just make the plays to help my team win. I hit Idbihi for a lay up near the end as well. I think that since I have so much variety that its hard for the defense to help on me. I am a small guy and I remember watching Allen Iverson and he also found ways to help his team win. Being able to score in a variety of ways really helps me in these kind of situations when the game is on the line.
You dazzled the crowd again with your incredible quickness to get to the hoop. Is there ever going to be a way to fully stop you?
Getting to the hoop with my speed is my biggest strength, but also having the ability to shoot, score off a pick and beating my man is big. I think just by having all this variety, there is really no way of stopping me.
You had 27 points, six rebounds and five assists. Another Dashaun Wood type of Derrick Rose day at the office.
I am happy that all these stats count and help the team win. Rebounding is always important and it all adds to the victory.
The NBA lockout is over. Are you thrilled?
Well yes I am. As soon as the NFL season is over, I will order the NBA package.
With the NBA resuming, how much will it hurt European basketball with NBA players going back?
It will be ok. Basketball has always been great in Europe. There is such great basketball talent in Europe. European basketball will be fine.
Thanks Dashaun for the chat.
