Jason spoke to German Hoops this summer about his new team s. Oliver Baskets Wurzburg.
How has your summer been? Has there been anything special you were able to do this summer that you haven´t been able to do the last years in your time off?
Summer is always nice. You get the chance to see family and friends, and I have the chance to get humbled back down. It’s nice being in NYC where no one knows who I am for a few months out of the year. I traveled a little more this summer than I had in the past but kept it pretty simple on a whole.
Congrats on your new job with s. Oliver baskets Wurzburg. How much did head coach John Patrick weigh into the equation for you to signing with the team?
Thank you. Obviously having the chance to play for someone I’ve been successful with for the past 3+ seasons was appealing, but it was also a combination of playing with John Little again as well as being reunited with Ben Jacobson.
There was some speculation that you might get offers from other top leagues in countries. Was taking the next step to say a country like France too soon for you?
I entertained a lot of offers this summer but at the end of the day I wanted to go somewhere where I could continue to prove myself as a starting center. I have a chance to do that in one of the best leagues in Europe and will be surrounded by players I know and enjoy playing with. Why go anywhere else?
You had 4 very prosperous years with BG Goettingen winning the Eurochallenge and reaching the Beko BBL playoffs 3 times. It is no secret that your cherished your time in Goettingen very much. What were the most important things that you were able to take with you as a player and person from that experience?
As a player I was able to learn a lot about preparation. Between teammates I’ve had and the coaches that I worked with, it was setting a goal to reach and preparing everyday to reach it. As a person, it was more about the relationships off the court. There are no fans anywhere in the world like the Veilchen fans and I’ve fortunately been able to form relationships that go deeper than basketball.
You played with many teammates with BG Goettingen. In 2008, you made the incredible jump from Regionaliga to BBL. How did a Willie Jenkins help you most in those last months in the 2007-2008 season?
Willie Jenkins did absolutely nothing for me, however guys like Dave Monds, Jahmar Thorpe and Jeb Ivey helped that transition by keeping my confidence high. By the time I got there the playoffs were out of reach and they could have easily tried to “get their numbers up” in preparation for the following season, but they incorporated me and if it wasn’t for them I don’t think my career would have turned out the same way.
Some critics see s. Oliver Baskets Wurzburg as a team fighting to stay in the beko BBL, but I think they have a pretty solid team and could be in the range of 8-14. Seeing the roster what can we expect from this team?
We have a lot of work to do, but if the past has proved anything, it would be a mistake to underestimate anyone in this league. If the season was determined by how teams look on paper then there would be no need to play the games.
The s. Oliver baskets have John Patrick, John Little, Ben Jacobson and you. Could the s. Oliver Baskets Wurzburg be a second type of BG Goettingen in that they could surprise many teams every night?
The best part about being reunited with these guys is the fact that we’ve become accustomed to a certain level of success. And any time one of us, or our teammates is not 100% focused on pursuing that level, we are there to put each other in check. We missed a little of that this season in Gottingen but I’m confident Ben Jacobson will bring that back with him. He brings the best out of John and I.
Has John Patrick discussed with what your role will be in Wurzburg? Do you see yourself becoming even more of a force under the basket then you already was in Gottingen?
I always want to improve my game, and I feel like coming into this season fully healthy will help me establish myself as a top center in this league. In retrospect I think, on a personal level, last season was a “down” year for me, but it taught me a lot and I’ll be entering this season with a focus that I have not yet possessed.
How excited are you about becoming teammates with Gilbert Brown. He had a great career at Pittsburg. Could he become a rising star in the Beko BBL?
Growing up in NY I’m a big Big East fan. It’s the best conference in the country and he was a top player in that league. I’m excited for the way his game can translate to the European style and think if he works hard he’ll be able to dominate the BBL.
How does a normal Jason Boone work out day look like this summer and what things were you working most on on your game?
Depends when in the summer you are asking about. In the beginning of the summer I do a lot of weight lifting, with a focus on lower body and core strength. As the summer progresses I play more basketball and try to focus on my conditioning.
What is your take on Ron Artest changing his name to World Peace?
It’s Ron Artest…I’m not surprised…are you? It was my understanding that he was just awarded a certificate for Outstanding Activism in the Community or something…so if his goal is his namesake then all the power to him.
What was the last DVD movie that you saw?
I was visiting my parents and watched “Waiting For Superman” with my mother.
Thanks Jason for the chat.
